Effect of Multi-Variant Thermal Treatment on Microstructure Evolution and Mechanical Properties of AlSi10Mg Processed by Direct Metal Laser Sintering and Casting

Abstract: This article presents a study on the influence of temperature and time of multi-variant heat treatment on the structure and properties of materials produced in direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) and casting technology. The materials were manufactured in the form of cuboidal elements with a cross-section of 1.5 mm × 15 mm and a length of 60 mm. The samples prepared in this way had a similar volume, but due to the production technology the metal crystallization took place at different rates and directions. In t… Show more

“…Selective laser sintering (SLS) emerges as another AM technique for thermoplastics but in fine powder form [10]. Direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) enlists the 3D printing of metals [11,12]. Among all abovementioned AM techniques, FDM is ranked high in terms of economic viability, processing, diversity in materials, and availability [13].…”

“…It was found that the use of Ni-based self-lubricating coatings contributes to a more stable frictional behaviour in the functionalised 3D-printed tools. The related technique of selective laser melting (SLM) is also well suited to the preparation of functional materials with protective coatings and with the incorporation of solid lubricants [178]. The results of Torres et al's work [177] confirm the enormous potential of using the combination of LMD with SLM for tool functionalisation.…”

“…The reduction of microhardness in the fusion zone is very similar for all analyzed samples, it changes from about 125-135 HV0.1 to 90 HV0.1. It is an effect of the dissolution of the strengthening phase in the liquid metal and heat treatment would be necessary to restore this phase in the structure of the alloy [8]. It is also possible to observe some exceptions in this trend, e.g.…”

“…For the precipitation-hardened aluminum alloys processed by a laser beam, the strength can be partly recovered after post-weld heat treatment, what is a potential solution for a decrease in mechanical properties [8]. The reduction in mechanical properties can be partly compensated during the welding process by the formation of ultrafine grain microstructure [3,9].…”
