Sustainable energy development is a major challenge, particularly when considering population increase, rising energy demands resulting from the excessive use of nonrenewable fossil fuels, and growing consequences on global pollution and climate change. It is critical to continue to develop new sources of renewable and clean energy. Direct alcohol fuel cell (DAFC) represents a technological approach that meets all the requirements in terms of energy conversion with good electrical efficiency and lower emissions of pollutants. However, it largely suffers from the poisoning of the anode catalyst caused by the accumulation of intermediate products. In this context, this review is devoted to discussing the recent progress in anode catalysts based on conducting polymers (CPs) materials for direct alcohol fuel cells, especially direct methanol and ethanol fuel cells, from the viewpoint of synthesis techniques, morphology, and catalytic performance. In the first part of this review, we will explore the most commonly used methods for preparing metal-conducting polymer-based nanocomposites, including the key factors influencing their morphology regardless of the application. The catalytic performances of mono-, bi-, and tri-metal catalysts deposited on conducting polymer-based supports for the electrooxidation of methanol and ethanol reactions are examined in detail in the second and third parts of this review. We also highlight the effect of the introduction of carbon nanomaterials into conducting polymer supports on the electrical properties and on the performance of the catalysts. Development of anode materials using nanostructured conducting polymers-based support plays a vital role in reducing catalyst loadings and should therefore shed light on the wide-scale commercialization of DAFCs. In a nutshell, this review will give readers a thorough understanding of the principles of direct alcohol fuel cells, new advancements in electrode materials based on non-precious metals, and the main challenges that should be dealt with.

Due to global industrialization, monitoring the number of gases and volatile compounds in the environment greatly affects sustainable human development. Since the 1970s, gas sensors have been used to find harmful gases and gas leaks, as well as to measure humidity and the composition of the atmosphere. Designing small, portable gas/vapor sensors with fast response, reversibility, selectivity, and sensitivity has been difficult. In a similar way, advances in nanotechnology have led scientists to make nanosensors. The development of sensors from traditional semiconductors, solid electrolytes, insulators, metals, etc. However, advances in sensor technology based on conducting polymers have opened up a new way of sensing by making it possible to find chemical/water vapors and industrial waste gases even in complex environments. On the other hand, metal-based sensors were found to be good at detecting industrial waste gases. This review summarizes the work on conducting polymers and metal-based sensors for detecting ammonia, alcohol, chloroform, humidity, industrial waste gases, and other things. The shortcomings and future improvements in the sensing performance of conducting polymer sensors are discussed additionally in this literature review.

: Conducting polymers are an outstanding class of materials characterized by electroconducting properties that make them good candidates for applications in several sectors. Among them, polyaniline (PANI) is unique for its extraordinary ability to conduct electricity, biocompatibility and low toxicity. In spite of its surprising features, to date PANI have not yet found application in the practical uses, because of its low solubility and processability. In order to overcome these limitations, different approaches have been developed, such as polymer grafting processes, PANI-based composites and blends preparation. The present review describes the most recent advances on PANI applications in biomedical fields, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial and antivirus activity, drug delivery, cancer therapy, etc. A look to the synthetic procedures is also reported because it is crucial for the realization of more innovative materials in the next future.
