Effect of molybdenum and chromium contents in sliding wear of high-chromium white cast iron: The relationship between microstructure and wear

Abstract: High-chromium white cast irons are commonly used in applications requiring excellent abrasion resistance, as in the mining and mineral ore processing industry. Their excellent abrasion resistance is mainly due to their solidification microstructures. During their solidification, high levels of chromium (16-32%) lead to the formation of a high-volume fraction of eutectic M 7 C 3 -carbides, which may or may not be associated with primary carbides in a heterogeneous austenitic/martensitic dendritic structure. “…Furthermore, Cr, Mo and N are important elements of addition allowing the hardening of the metallic alloys and the formation of passive films to fight against the chemical corrosion [6]. They have a good adhesion to the steel substrata because of the solubility of Mo in the ferrous alloys [7,8] consequently.…”

“…By continuous exposure to environment, these materials get degraded. Due to the continuous exposure to such environment, the body erosion in automotive applications wear of these materials plays a major role [5].…”

“…slurry pumps, where abrasion and/or erosion in aqueous environments occur [21,22]. Most studies found in the literature have concentrated either on the corrosion behaviour of high-Cr WCIs [23][24][25] or on their wear characteristics in air and in slurries [21,[26][27][28][29]. Only in a few studies the synergistic approach has been used, either based on the ASTM G119 methodology or slightly modified [30][31][32][33].…”
