Biodegradable packaging plastics combining good mechanical properties and low gas permeability is required to avoid environmental and food safety concerns. This study explores the impact of montmorillonite (MMT) and halloysite nanotubes (HNT), on the mechanical, optical, and oxygen permeability of blown film poly (butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT) composites. The morphology of the films was evaluated by x‐ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy. Good distribution/dispersion of clays is found in the PBAT‐MMT films. Besides, there is an increase in the crystallinity of PBAT due to the nucleating effect of HNT. Improvement in the tensile strength and elongation at break in the machine direction is obtained up to a clay content of 1.5 vol%. The incorporation of 1.5 vol% of MMT and 1 vol% of HNT leads to a reduction in the oxygen permeability of the PBAT film by 29% and 38% respectively. Furthermore, the films remain transparent regardless of clay content. Finally, the feasibility of the films for food storage is tested in grapes, obtaining extended shelf life. The favorable mechanical, barrier and optical properties of the biodegradable films, along with the scalable production process, make them attractive for application in the storage and preservation of food products.

Mica is a variety of filler material with excellent barrier properties. In the present study, mica‐AKD was successfully prepared by treating sericite mica surface with alkyl ketene dimer (AKD). The distribution and content of AKD in mica, the mode of its binding with mica and its surface properties were characterized by thermogravimetry, Soxhlet extraction, Fourier infrared analysis, the scanning electron microscope with energy spectrum and contact angle analysis. The results show that AKD was combined with mica through physical adsorption and chemical grafting, with the content of AKD in mica‐AKD exceeding 5 wt%. Due to AKD‐coated mica surface, mica‐AKD showed hydrophobicity. PCM and PCMa films were prepared by blending PBAT and PPC with mica and mica‐AKD, respectively. Given the same content, mica‐AKD has better compatibility with PBAT/PPC matrix, and PCMa films show better mechanical properties, lower water vapor permeability and oxygen permeability, and higher CDTR/OTR ratio, which has a good application prospect in fruit and vegetable preservation materials.

This work pioneers the application of direct ink writing (DIW) to fabricate elastomeric additively manufactured vision based tactile sensor (VBTS). DIW cuts down the fabrication time by 76%, allowing design precise control and reducing the complexities of the process compared to the state‐of‐the‐art (SOTA) molding techniques. Successful fabrication of DIW sensor was verified in three stages. Firstly, the mechanical characteristics of the DIW sensor are at par with those of SOTA molded Ecoflex in terms of depth of compression, compression rate, and the number of cycles. Secondly, using robotic pose estimation as a demonstration, the force enables deformation in the DIW sensor shows comparable normality estimation performance to that of the SOTA Ecoflex with a mean absolute error of less than 0.6 degrees. Thirdly, Finite Element Analysis of DIW and SOTA Ecoflex sensors using Yeoh model shows similar stress and strain distributions as another evidence of DIW deformability and durability signaling sensor’s successful fabrication.This article is protected by copyright.
