For the thorough research on coal metamorphism impact on gas adsorption capacity, this paper collected and summarized parameters of experimental adsorption isotherms, coal maceral, proximate analysis and ultimate analysis obtained from National Engineering Research Center of Coal Gas Control and related literatures at home and abroad, systematically discussed the coal rank effect on its physicochemical properties and methane adsorption capacity, in which the coal rank was shown in Vitrinite reflectance, furthermore, obtained the Semi-quantitative relationship between physicochemical properties of coal and methane adsorption capacity.

A mathematical model was developed to predict the coal bed methane (CBM) production and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) sequestration in a coal seam accounting for the coal seam properties. The model predictions showed that, for a CBM production and dewatering process, the pressure could be reduced from 15.17 MPa to 1.56 MPa and the gas saturation increased up to 50% in 30 years for a 5.4 × 10 5 m 2 of coal formation. For the CO 2 sequestration process, the model prediction showed that the CO 2 injection rate was first reduced and then slightly recovered over 3 to 13 years of injection, which was also evidenced by the actual in seam data. The model predictions indicated that the sweeping of the water in front of the CO 2 flood in the cleat porosity could be important on the loss of injectivity. Further model predictions suggested that the injection rate of CO 2 could be about 11 × 10 3 m 3 per day; the injected CO 2 would reach the production well, which was separated from the injection well by 826 m, in about 30 years. During this period, about 160 × 10 6 m 3 of CO 2 could be stored within a 21.4 × 10 5 m 2 of coal seam with a thickness of 3 m.

For the purpose of better estimating the CBM resource potential in the study area, the high rank CBM reservoirs were studied by geological surveys and laboratory measurements in Xiangning mining area, eastern Ordos Basin. Geological characteristics of coals in the Xiangning mining area provide favourable conditions for the development of CBM reservoirs. Coal seams are dominated by semibright coal, which are all low volatile anthracite coal with R max ranging from 2.22 to 2.50%. No. 2, 3 and 10 coal seams are vitrinite-rich (81.2%, averagely) and low to middle ash yield coals (16.86-21.49%, averagely). The permeability values of coal reservoirs range form 0.0067 to 0.268 mD, and the porosity is from 2.82 to 4.14% in the study area. Microfractures are mainly tensile structure, pores of coals are dominated by macropores, mesopores came next to it followed by micropores, and the great majority of induced porosity is stomas in the study area. No. 2, 3 and 10 CBM reservoirs are characterized by higher gas capacities (26.08 to 27.27 m 3 /t, V L ). The gas content of CBM reservoirs has a positive correlation with the burial depth.
