Effect of Mixing Strategy on the Structure-Properties of the PLA/PBAT Blends Incorporated with CNC

Abstract: Polylactide (PLA)/poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) blend nanocomposites including 3 wt% of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were prepared by melt compounding method in a twin-screw extruder and an internal mixer. Blend nanocomposites were formulated by diluting three different masterbatches prepared by solution casting method that contained 7 wt% of CNC. These masterbatches were: (m1) PLA/PBAT/CNC masterbatch; (m2) PLA/CNC masterbatch; and (m3) PBAT/CNC masterbatch. These were to explore how differ… Show more

“…Figure 2A,B show an increase in the dispersed PBAT droplet size of the 90/10/2/1HPB compared to the 90/10/2. The growth of the size of the dispersed phase droplets has been reported as a sign of nanofiller localization in the dispersed phase because of the increased viscosity and elasticity of the dispersed phase 23,35 . The dispersed droplet size begins to diminish when the nanosilica concentration is increased.…”

The finer PBAT micro-domains are shown in the 90/2/2/5HPB.…”

“…2b, during the subsequent heating cycle, no cold crystallization peak is observed for PLA-, PLA-, and PLA-. This absence of a cold crystallization peak could potentially stem from the creation of more fully formed crystals during the cooling phase [20]. The X c of PLA-is 33.7%.…”

“…Nanofillers frequently cluster within the phase that has the least interfacial tension. When nanofillers are located in the dispersed phase, the droplet size increases due to the increase in the viscoelasticity of the phase [24]. The size of the dispersed phase decreases as the nanoparticles are concentrated in the matrix [25].…”
