Nowadays, CO2 capture is a vital technology to notably reduce the uncontrolled released CO2 emissions. CO2 capture using graphene oxide, a derivative of graphene, has become of tremendous interest due to its unique morphology. In this present work, graphene oxide (GrO) was synthesized under ultrasound irradiation according to the modified Hummers’ method and its CO2 capture performance was examined. The X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyses were applied to explore the structure of the sample. CO2 capture performance of GrO was examined by performing TG analysis under different temperatures. The CO2 adsorption capacity of GrO was reached up to 1.04 mmol g-1 at 25°C. The experimental data getting from the kinetic study revealed that the Avrami model better described the CO2 adsorption.

One of the most serious environmental problems is the global warming brought by CO2 and other greenhouse gases. Thus, the development of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage Technology (CCUS) is urgent. Thereinto, the merits of porous carbon adsorption materials are their substantial specific surface area, stable physical and chemical properties, adjustable pore structure, etc., and they are considered to be good adsorbents for CO2. The adsorption properties of porous carbon material are capable of being directionally controlled by regulating the collocation of carbonization and activation methods and setting the technological parameters used in the preparation process. In addition, nitrogen doping can enhance the effect between adsorbent and adsorbate, leading to higher CO2 adsorption capacity. After in-depth studies, although there is still no clear explanation on the mechanism of nitrogen-doped enhancement of the adsorption properties of the adsorbent, it can be confirmed that the main reason is not the traditional acid–base theory, but a large number of micropores, specific surface area, and induction forces are more likely to be the root cause. The porous carbon materials preparation methods, pore structure adjustment strategies, and the types of functionalization and mechanism between nitrogen-doped sites and adsorbents are highlighted in this Review. Finally, the future development direction and existing challenges of this emerging field are also discussed.

A Comprehensive Review on Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Carbon Dioxide Photoreduction

Inspired by natural photosynthesis, harnessing the wide range of natural solar energy and utilizing appropriate semiconductor‐based catalysts to convert carbon dioxide into beneficial energy species, for example, CO, CH4, HCOOH, and CH3COH have been shown to be a sustainable and more environmentally friendly approach. Graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) has been regarded as a highly effective photocatalyst for the CO2 reduction reaction, owing to its cost‐effectiveness, high thermal and chemical stability, visible light absorption capability, and low toxicity. However, weaker electrical conductivity, fast recombination rate, smaller visible light absorption window, and reduced surface area make this catalytic material unsuitable for commercial photocatalytic applications. Therefore, certain procedures, including elemental doping, structural modulation, functional group adjustment of g‐C3N4, the addition of metal complex motif, and others, may be used to improve its photocatalytic activity towards effective CO2 reduction. This review has investigated the scientific community's perspectives on synthetic pathways and material optimization approaches used to increase the selectivity and efficiency of the g‐C3N4‐based hybrid structures, as well as their benefits and drawbacks on photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Finally, the review concludes a comparative discussion and presents a promising picture of the future scope of the improvements.
