Effect of metoclopramide on nosocomial pneumonia in patients with nasogastric feeding in the intensive care unit

Abstract: This study in the Islamic Republic of Iran aimed to determine whether metoclopramide can prevent nosocomial pneumonia in the intensive care unit (ICU). Of 220 patients admitted to the surgical ICU who had a nasogastric tube for more than 24 hours, 68 case patients received oral metoclopramide (10 mg every 8 hours) and 152 control patients did not. Similar proportions of cases and controls developed nosocomial pneumonia (33.8% versus 33.6%). Endotracheal intubation was a risk factor for nosocomial pneumonia (od… Show more

“…There was one trial with a low risk of bias [ 24 ], and two studies had a high risk of bias [ 25 , 28 ] due to inappropriate randomization and/or allocation concealment. For the remaining 12 studies, we were unable to comprehensively evaluate the risk of bias due to the lack of information [ 23 , 26 , 27 , 29 – 37 ].…”

“…Using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool, we judged two studies to be at high risk of bias due to inappropriate randomization and blinding methods [ 30 , 48 ], five studies were at low risk of bias [ 29 , 31 , 43 45 ], and we were not able to comprehensively assess risk of bias in six studies due to lack of information [ 27 , 28 , 41 , 42 , 46 , 47 ]. The details of risk of bias assessment are presented in Fig.…”

“…Metoclopramide and domperidone are commonly used as prokinetic agents in the ICU. Studies have shown that metoclopramide may improve gastrointestinal peristalsis, increase gastric emptying and increase patients’ tolerance to enteral nutrition [ 27 - 29 ], but did not reduce the incidence of ventilation-associated pneumonia [ 30 , 31 ]. Metoclopramide was often used to promote the success rate of bedside blind placement of nasojejunal tubes [ 32 , 33 ], but its effects are controversial.…”
