Effect of methyl methacrylate content on coatings’ properties of palm oleic acid-based macromer

Abstract: The macromer was synthesized using medium oil length oleic acid, phthalic anhydride, and glycerol. The synthesized macromer and methyl methacrylate (MMA) were copolymerized by free radical polymerization in toluene. The ratio between the macromer and MMA changed, and the effects on different properties of the copolymers, such as glass transition temperature (T g ) and film properties, were studied. The macromer and copolymer structures were characterized by FTIR and 1 H NMR spectroscopies. The coatings prepare… Show more

“…The hybrid polymers are very attractive because they have the potential to combine the useful properties of each component. Numerous studies have been carried out for the preparation of such polymers from methyl methacrylate (MMA) and alkyd resin based on linoleic acid [10] and from butyl acrylate and alkyd resin based on linoleic and linolenic acid [11] . It was found that the hybrid polymers have good adhesion, good drying rate and chemical resistance [11] .…”

“…Rubber and other plastics such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are used as soft anti-skid particles. Ceramic particles and natural sand are used as hard anti-skid particles [6]. In this research, the pavement surface for preventing slip was created by combination of NR and Methyl methacrylate (MMA) resin for coating on the pavement surface which may increase friction, abrasion and wear resistant.…”

“…Direct addition of acrylic monomers onto the fatty acid double bonds was not observed. Gan et al 8,9 reported copolymerization of oleic alkyd resin with MMA in toluene in the presence of benzoyl peroxide. From 1 H NMR results, the decrease of the oleic double bond concentration was observed, and the grafting of both monomers was found to be across the double bonds.…”
