Effect of Methionine Deficiency on the Growth Performance, Serum Amino Acids Concentrations, Gut Microbiota and Subsequent Laying Performance of Layer Chicks

Abstract: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of methionine (Met) deficiency in the rearing period on the growth performance, amino acids metabolism, intestinal development and gut microbiome of egg-laying chicks and the continuous effects on the performance, egg quality, and serum amino acids metabolism of the subsequent development process. Three hundred sixty one-day-old chicks were randomly divided into two groups and fed on a basal diet (NC group, Met 0.46%) and Met deficiency diet (Met- group, Met 0… Show more

“…As for the effects of MCR on the whole body compositions, decreased MCR linearly decreased lean tissue weight and BW in the NCG which corresponds with previous studies ( Jariyahatthakij et al, 2018 ; Liu et al, 2022 ) suggesting the importance of Met in body growth cannot be replaced by Cys. While in the CG, partially substituting Met with Cys did not affect the BW and lean tissue weight.…”

“…Methionine ( Met ) is considered as the first limiting amino acid in broilers fed corn soybean meal based diets ( Bunchasak, 2009 ; Attia et al, 2020 ) and maintains the normal growth and functions of the broilers ( Fagundes et al, 2020 ; Liu et al, 2022 ). Cysteine ( Cys ) is considered a semi-essential amino acid since it can be converted from Met ( Castro and Kim, 2020 ).…”

“… Fagundes et al (2020) assigned 40 broiler chicks into Met-sufficient or Met-deficient groups and found that birds fed with Met-deficient diet had worse growth and feed efficiency. Liu et al (2022) also provided chicks with Met-deficient diet and reported that body weight, weight gain, and feed efficiency were impaired by restricting dietary Met contents. However, in this study, we did not observe that dietary Met restriction had negative effects on BWG, FI, and feed efficiency of broiler chicks ( Table 3 ).…”
