Effect of metal coating in all-fiber acousto-optic tunable filter using torsional wave

Abstract: Torsional mode acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) is demonstrated using a metal-coated birefringent optical fiber for an improved robustness. The changes in acoustic and optical properties of a metal-coated birefringent optical fiber induced by the thin metal coating were analyzed experimentally and theoretically. The filter wavelength shift is successfully explained as a result of combined effect of acoustic wavelength change and optical birefringence change. We also demonstrated a small form-factor configur… Show more

“…The combination of moisture and stress can cause microscopic flaws in the glass to propagate, resulting in fiber failure [13]. Recently, acoustooptic coupling using torsional waves was demonstrated in a thin metal-coated optical fiber [14]. The metal coating, in the order of a hundred nm thick, provides low attenuation of the elastic wave and surface protection of the fiber, but still fiber handling is compromised.…”

“…The acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) has been considered as a strategic optical dispositive for optical communication due your compact size, high-speed switching and wideband wavelength selectivity (Onaka et al 2008;Veeriah et al 2007;Katrasnik et al 2010;Gupta et al 2012;Sabóia and Ferreira 2009;Sobrinho and Sombra 2002;Sobrinho et al 2002;Tran 1997;Jung et al 2005;Yariv and Yeh 1984;Xu and Stroud 1992;Xie et al 2013;Song et al 2014;Mantsevich et al 2015).
