The pharmacodynamics aspects of homeopathic remedies are appraised by laboratory studies on the biological effects at various levels (cellular, molecular and systemic). The major question is how these medicines may work in the body. The possible answers concern the identification of biological targets, the means of drug-receptor interactions, the mechanisms of signal transmission and amplification, and the models of inversion of effects according to the traditional 'simile' rule. These problems are handled by two experimental and theoretical lines, according to the doses or dilutions considered (low-medium versus high dilutions). Homeopathic formulations in low-medium dilutions, containing molecules in the range of ultra-low doses, exploit the extreme sensitivity of biological systems to exogenous and endogenous signals. Their effects are interpreted in the framework of hormesis theories and paradoxical pharmacology. The hypotheses regarding the action mechanisms of highly diluted/dynamized solutions (beyond Avogadro-Loschmidt limit) variously invoke sensitivity to bioelectromagnetic information, participation of water chains in signalling, and regulation of bifurcation points of systemic networks. High-dilution pharmacology is emerging as a pioneering subject in the domain of nanomedicine and is providing greater plausibility to the puzzling claims of homeopathy.

Perialveolar bacterial microbiota and bacteraemia after dental alveolitis in adult rats that had been subjected to neonatal malnutrition

The aim of the present study was to analyse the bacteriological factors during the process of dental alveolitis, relating it to a higher incidence of bacteraemia in adult rats subjected to neonatal malnutrition. We used forty male Wistar rats, suckled by mothers fed a diet during lactation containing 17 % protein in the nourished group (N) or 8 % protein in the undernourished group (UN). After weaning, the animals were given the Labina standard diet. After 90 d, these animals underwent upper right incisor extraction and induction of alveolitis. The oral microbiota was obtained using a swab and blood culture through venous blood. These procedures were performed before the extraction, 5 min after extraction, on the 21st day after alveolitis for groups N-21 and UN-21 and on the 28th day after alveolitis for groups N-28 and UN-28. Data were expressed as means and standard deviations for parametric data, and as medians and interquartile intervals for non-parametric data. Statistical significance was considered by assuming a critical level of 5 %. Before and after extraction, lower bacterial growth was observed per colony-forming unit (CFU) in the perialveolar region of the upper right incisors of undernourished animals, while the opposite was true after alveolitis, when a larger number of CFU was observed in these animals. The percentage of positive blood cultures obtained after alveolitis was greater in the undernourished animals. The present study thus demonstrated the influence of neonatal malnutrition in the perialveolar microbiota and in the development of bacteraemia after dental alveolitis.

<p>La enfermedad periodontal es una patología de origen infeccioso, caracterizada por ocasionar secuelas destructivas al tejido de soporte del diente, y cuyo tratamiento va encaminado a la destrucción de los agentes etiológicos y a la regeneración periodontal. Una alternativa es el uso de agentes homeopáticos ya que son naturales y se administran a muy bajas concentraciones, uno de ellos es el Mercurius Heel® S como coadyuvante en enfermedades infecciosas. En este trabajo se presentan los resultados de una investigación cuyo objetivo fue evaluar el efecto del Mercurius Heel® S en la viabilidad de fibroblastos gingivales humanos, que fueron sometidos a tratamiento con Mercurius Heel® S durante 15 minutos y dos horas a concentraciones desde 300mg hasta 0.00006mg. Transcurridos esos tiempos, se retiró el tratamiento y las células fueron mantenidas durante 24, 48 y 72 horas más. Posteriormente se realizó un ensayo colorimétrico de viabilidad y proliferación celular denominado MTS de promega®</p><p>Los fibroblastos gingivales humanos tratados con Mercurius Heel® S mostraron un aumento en la proliferación celular comparada con las células no tratadas. Bajas concentraciones del medicamento 0,0001mg y 0,00006mg mostraron una mayor proliferación observando diferencias estadísticamente significativas. El tratamiento a 15 minutos mostró mejores resultados con respecto al tratamiento de 2 horas con diferencias estadísticamente significativas también. Finalmente el efecto del Mercurius Heel® se mantuvo hasta las primeras 48 horas. Considerando lo anterior, el Mercurius Heel® no presentó ningún efecto citotóxico en los fibroblastos gingivales; por el contrario, las células proliferaron, lo que sugiere su utilidad como tratamiento complementario en la enfermedad periodontal.</p>

Abstract: Merc sol. 12 cH did not reduce bacterial growth, but the microbiotica remained within the parameters of normality, obtaining the best results at 21 days after treatment.
