Effect of Magnetic Field on Partial Discharge Dynamics in Insulation Systems of Transportation Power Devices

Abstract: The globally observed trend toward electrically supplied devices is common in the transportation segment. Traditionally, the performance of electrical insulation has been assessed with respect to electric stresses and endurance. In all current-carrying devices, magnetic fields will also be superimposed on electric ones; therefore, the influence of a magnetic field's exposure on partial discharge (PD) dynamics is an actual research topic. This problem is important in the T This article has been accepted for pub… Show more

“…Experimental setup and instrumentation. The measurements were performed in the original setup which allowed for sensitive detection in the presence of weak magnetic field, since conventionally PD measurement are carried out only in the electric field 21 . The presented experiments were performed in the crossed magnetic and electric field setup; the experimental arrangement is presented in Fig.…”

“…The globally observed trend toward electrically supplied devices is common also in the transportation segment. The influence of magnetic fields on PD in insulation systems of transportation power devices is presented in 21 . The measurements revealed enhanced PD intensity in the presence of a magnetic field that can be observed in a supply voltage frequency range of 20–400 Hz (which is typical for the transportation segment).…”

“…The tendency toward higher voltage levels can be observed in both power transmission and distribution as well as in emerging segments such as ground and air transportation [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. This implies an adequate design of electrical insulation systems to withstand electrical stresses, and it concerns both AC and DC cases.…”

“…Classically, only the effect of an electric field has been taken into account in PD investigations, whereas the influence of a magnetic field has been neglected. However, all current-carrying devices are also simultaneously exposed to surrounding magnetic fields; this refers to the insulation systems of power grids, substations, transportation, and industrial network devices [2,[6][7][8]. The most common types of discharges refer to either internal discharges in gaseous inclusions inside solid dielectrics, surface discharges, and discharges in insulating liquids or external corona [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17].…”
