Effect of magnetic activity saturation in chromospheric flux-flux relationships

Abstract: We present a homogeneous study of chromospheric and coronal flux–flux relationships using a sample of 298 late‐type dwarf active stars with spectral types F to M. The chromospheric lines were observed simultaneously in each star to avoid spread as a result of long‐term variability. Unlike other works, we subtract the basal chromospheric contribution in all the spectral lines studied. For the first time, we quantify the departure of dMe stars from the general relations. We show that dK and dKe stars also deviat… Show more

“…As expected, we find a correlation between the equivalent widths of the Hα line, the rest of Balmer lines, and the Ca H & K doublet (at least for the seven brightest targets; e.g., Martínez-Arnáiz et al 2011). To our knowledge, this is the first time that the calcium doublet is investigated down to the M spectral type in σ Orionis (Muzerolle et al 2003 tabulated equivalent widths of Hγ and the calcium infrared triplet at 8500-8660 Å, but not of the Ca H & K doublet).…”

“…Therefore, the correlations between different chromospheric activity indicators and the relation of excess chromospheric emission with other activity indicators had gained lot of attention (e.g. Schrijver, Dobson & Radick 1992;Montes et al 1995Montes et al , 1996Martínez-Arnáiz et al 2011). In fact, this topic need further investigation, e.g., need complex physical models to interpret the correlations, which is beyond the scope of this paper.…”

“…Up to now stellar activity has been studied for the young objects with activity close to saturation and less active stars observed during execution of exoplanet search programmes (for example, Wright et al 2004;Martínez-Arnáiz et al 2011). Previously, we Fig.…”
