Effect of low‐pressure cold plasma on the properties of edible film based on alginate enriched with Dunaliella salina powder

Abstract: Edible films based on sodium alginate enriched with different percentages of Dunaliella salina powder were prepared and treated by cold plasma for diverse durations in the presence of oxygen and argon. The results demonstrated that plasma treatment, especially in the presence of argon, improves film tensile strength and Young's modulus but reduces its flexibility. Surface morphologies and topography clearly show that cold plasma's physical and chemical etching affected the microstructure of films and increased… Show more

“…Typically, a strong bombardment generates plasma ions, free radicals and other reactive species that could interact with the functional groups on the film surface (Bahrami et al ., 2022). The formation of double bonds, as well as cross‐links from those interactions, has been reported to enhance the TS values of the films (Gholamazad et al ., 2022). However, this study's TS values of plasma‐treated films tended to decrease with a longer treatment time.…”

“…The declining of the peak intensities at 1025 cm −1 , 1151 cm −1 and 3282 cm −1 in the spectra of CP90s when compared to control indicated the film breakage (Chen et al ., 2019), leading to the decrease in oxygen barrier property of the films. Moreover, the decrease in the peak intensity at 1405 cm −1 and 2872 cm −1 of CP90s could be attributed to the degradation of the C‐H bond in polymer chain (Sheikhi et al ., 2021a; Gholamazad et al ., 2022).…”

“…Cold plasma is defined as a partially ionized gas comprising highly reactive species (reactive oxygen and nitrogen species), ions with a negative or positive charge, free radicals, electrons, gas atoms, and molecules, and electromagnetic radiation (photons) quantum at room temperature (Afshar et al., 2022 ; Gholamazad et al., 2022 ).…”

“…Cold plasma can produce a large number of electronic and free radical active groups, thereby being used for modified materials at low temperatures. [12,13] To date, various types of nonthermal plasma-assisted methods have been widely studied, including glow discharge, [14] dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), [15][16][17] corona discharge, [18] and microwave plasma. [19] Among them, glow discharge plasma offers a promising and attractive alternative for reduction of metal ions at low temperatures.…”
