Effect of Lonicerae Flos extracts on reflux esophagitis with antioxidant activity

Abstract: AIM:To observe the effects of traditional antiinflammatory medicine Lonicerae Flos (LF) on rat reflux esophagitis (RE) induced by pylorus and forestomach ligation compared with the well-known proton antioxidant, α-tocopherol. M E T H O D S: R a t s w e r e p r e t r e a t e d w i t h t h r e e different dosages of LF (500, 250 and 125 mg/kg) orally, once a day for 14 d before pylorus and forestomach ligation. Nine hours after pylorus and forestomach ligation, changes to the stomach and esophagus lesion areas, … Show more

“…ASMq reduced the indicators of oxidative damage, increased SOD and GSH-Px levels to values similar to normal, while partially normalizing the increased levels of MDA. Furthermore, ASMq was found to reverse or oppose the negative effects of doxorubicin + 5-FU on liver function and liver and heart morphology, which was consistent with previous studies (20,21,(58)(59)(60). In the present study, significant differences were detected in the heart homogenate levels of MDA, GSH-Px and SOD between normal groups and doxorubicin + 5-FU treatment groups.…”

“…SOD is able to specifically eliminate free oxygen radicals by transforming surplus oxygen free radicals into hydrogen peroxide, which is transformed by catalase and GSH-Px into water, thus reducing free radical-mediated cell damage (54). Furthermore, GSH-Px is an important antioxidase (19)(20)(21), and may cause lipid peroxide to change into a alcohol type fatty acid, to complement SOD.…”

“…To further detail changes, the total thickness of the fundic mucosa, from the luminal mucosal surface to the muscularis mucosa on the periulcerative regions of the cross‐trimmed histological specimens, was measured using an automated computer‐based image analyzer under microscopy (Model Eclipse 80i, Nikon, Tokyo, Japan) as described by Ku et al. (2009). In addition, lesion invasive percentages in the fundus (%) were also calculated as follows in Equation (1) according to the method of Ku et al.…”

“…Previously, Flos Lonicerae extract, which contains CGA as a major component, increased the activities of endogenous antioxidants including GSH, superoxide dismutase and catalase, and ultimately reduced esophageal damage induced by RE (Ku et al, 2009). CGA, a phenolic compound with antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties, inhibited lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammatory cytokines release in RAW264.7 cells (Shan et al, 2009).…”
