This article describes how the use of mobile devices has huge potential in assisting mobile users to perform everyday tasks. However, there is a small percentage of older people that uses mobile devices. This shows that, there are several factors that influenced the small group of older people to adopt the technology. In addition, there have been limited studies that investigate factors that influenced older people to adopt mobile devices. This article aims to understand the causes that have encouraged older people to adopt such technology. Qualitative methods including interview and focus groups were conducted among twenty-one older people aged 55 and above. The results indicated that, there were five factors that influenced older people to use mobile devices. These factors were mobile device design, functions, social inspiration, economical and other related factors.

Abstract. This study presents a shear strength prediction model for concrete beams reinforced with GFRP bars. An empirical equation is developed using multiple regression analysis from the experimental results of 16 RC beams with GFRP bars. The proposed equation involved the parameters that affected the shear strength of beams such as compressive concrete strength, shear span ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio and modulus elasticity of the reinforcement. The accuracy of the proposed equation was verified by predicting the available experimental data from the literature. Furthermore, the predictions of shear capacities were compared with the current shear design code of ACI 440.1R-06. As a result, the ACI 440 provides very conservative prediction, while a better prediction is obtained from the shear strength prediction model in the present study.

This research presents an experimental study related to the shear behavior of simply supported reinforced concrete beams reinforced with Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bars. Four concrete beams reinforced with GFRP bars and four control concrete beams reinforced with steel bars were tested until failure. In order to realize the occurrence of shear failure, all tested beams were designed with longitudinal reinforcement only and without shear reinforcement. The test variables used in this study were the concrete strength, f'c, and longitudinal reinforcement ratio, ρ. The crack patterns, location of the diagonal crack and angle of the diagonal crack were also observed during the test. The shear design equations obtained from the codes and references were used to evaluate the data obtained from the test. Finally, based on the data obtained from experimental and theoretical analysis, comments and recommendation on the shear strength equations were suggested.
