Abstract

The ever increasing demand for protein-rich seafood worldwide has led to an increase in aquaculture with marine catch almost stagnating over the past few years. With a long coastline, the potential for shrimp farming and export is huge in India. With the introduction of Pacific White leg Shrimp, Penaeus vannamei in the last decade, Shrimp farming has developed as one of the fastest growing export sectors in India. Indian shrimp production currently stands at close to 592,275 MT for all species, approximately 83.4% of which is P. vannamei. India exported 1.2 million MT of seafood worth over US $ 5.96 billion in the year 2020-2021.
