“…Lindane inhibited human chorionic gonadotropin-stimulated T production by rat Leydig cells [ 101 , 102 ], suggesting that the compound might affect testicular steroidogenesis [ 105 ]. Indeed, lindane inhibits mouse CYP11A1 activity [ 106 ].…”

“…One report (Walsh and Stocco, 2000) studying mouse Leydig cells, pinpoints this effect to the expression of the StAR gene, which encodes the protein performing the rate limiting step of steroidogenesis. In the female reproductive system, lindane has been shown to inhibit the ovarian side-chain cleavage enzyme (CYP11A1) (Sircar and Lahiri, 1990) as well as placental activity of the aromatase enzyme (CYP19) (Nativelle-Serpentini et al, 2003). In addition to the effects of lindane on reproduction, a few reports indicate that adrenal steroidogenesis may also be a target for toxicity.…”

“…In contrast, studies in pregnant mice have shown that Lindane causes a decrease in whelping rate and litter size (Sircar and Lahiri, 1989). These effects of Lindane on fertility may be due to a decreased rate of steroidogenesis (Sircar and Lahiri, 1990), which would adversely affect the steroid hormone-dependent changes necessary for pregnancy maintenance. Lindane has been shown to influence steroid hormone production (Srivastava and Raizada, 1993;Tiemann et al, 1996), althought it did not decrease oestradiol concentrations when given to rodents (Laws et al, 1994).…”
