Asthma is an allergic chronic inflammatory disease of the pulmonary airways, characterized by the infiltration of white blood cells and release of inflammatory cytokines of complex pathways linked to its pathogenesis. Syringin extracted from various medicinal plants has been used extensively for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Hence, this study was conducted to further explore the protective effects of the syringin in ovalbumin (OVA) induced‐asthma mice model. OVA‐sensitized BALB mice were treated intraperitonealy with three doses (25, 50 and 100 mg/kg) of the syringin which was validated by the alteration in the immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels, cytokines levels, histopathological evaluation inflammatory cell count, lung weight, nitrite (NO) levels, oxidative stress biomarkers and gene markers. The treatment of syringin intensely reduced the increased IgE, inflammatory cytokines, WBC count and restored the antioxidant stress markers OVA stimulated animals. In addition, a significant reduction in inflammation and mucus production was evidenced in histopathological analysis which was further validated by suppression NF‐κB pathway activation by syringin. These results suggest that syringin may improve asthma symptoms in OVA‐induced mice by modulating NF‐κB pathway activation.

The reaction of the structural components of small bronchi and terminal bronchioles is the urgent issue of morphology and medicine in general, as well as one of the insufficiently studied issue in the study of morphological changes in the airways with allergic inflammation in the chronobiological aspect. The purpose of this work is to study the morphometric parameters of distal airways of guinea pigs sensitized with ovalbumin. We have studied the lung of 48 guinea pigs, using histological, morphometric and statistical methods under conditions of experimental ovalbumin-induced allergic inflammation, simulated by three times subcutaneous sensitization and subsequent 8-day intranasal inhalation of ovalbumin. The thickness of mucosa, muscular layer and adventitial layer was determined to assess morphometric parameters of bronchioles and terminal bronchioles. There are reactive changes in morphometric parameters of bronchioles on the 23rd and 30th days of observation, such as the thinning of mucosa and on the 36th day such as muscular-fibrous hyperplasia, accompanied by the narrowing of the bronchioles lumen. There are the most significant confirmed statistically changes in the terminal bronchioles on the 36th day of the experiment such as the thickening of mucosa and adventitial layer, accompanied by muscular hyperplasia and edema of the connective tissue stroma. Thus, sensitization and allergization with ovalbumin of experimental animals cause morpho-functional changes in the structural elements of the wall of bronchioles and terminal bronchioles, which have a staged, mainly multidirectional character and correspond to the main morphological manifestations of allergic inflammation with maximal changes in the late period of its development (the 36th day of the experiment).

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract in which the numerous immune cells, including eosinophils, neutrophils, macrophages, T-lymphocytes, mast cells and epithelial lining play key roles. The numerous anti-asthmatic drugs are available in modern medicine to treat asthma, but they have several disadvantages, including side effects and the cost variations, which compromise treatment compliance. The literature review reveals that traditional herbal medicines have good potential as alternative treatment and management for asthma. However, communities hesitated to use the traditional herbal medicines due to lack of established mechanism of action about their anti-asthmatic potential. The present review aimed to summarise the information stated in the literature about the potential effect of traditional medicinal plants (TMPs) conferring protection against ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthma model. The literature search was conducted in database like PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and ScienceDirect. After screening through the literature from 2011 to date, a total of 27 medicinal plants and two polyherbal extracts have been reported to be used as traditional herbal medicines and also utilised to be tested against OVAinduced asthma, were included. We found them to be an important alternative source of treatment for asthma, since some have comparable efficacies with drugs commonly used in the modern system against asthma. All the reported medicinal plants confirmed their traditional use against asthma or its related inflammation. The present review provides faith in traditional information and also offers new insight into the potential of natural products against asthma.
