Effect of Lavandula dentata extract on Ovalbumin-induced Asthma in Male Guinea Pigs

Abstract: Abstract Asthma is an inflammatory disease of the lungs, and it causes oxidative stress. Lavandula dentata is an aromatic herb with anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities. This study examined the activity of L. dentata extract on a guinea pig model of asthma. Adult males were divided into five groups: First group was control, second was asthma model induced by OVA, third was treated with L. dentata extract orally (300 mg/kg) for 21 days; the fourth was an asthma model with L. dentata extract … Show more

“…This study exposed that treatment with syringin results in a significant decrease in total and differential cell count which marked the anti‐inflammatory effects of syringin. These results are in agreement with Almohawes and Alruhaimi, 35 demonstrated that Lavandula dentata extract is effective in the prevention of leukocyte in OVA‐induced asthma in male guinea pigs. Again, the results demonstrate the intricacy and severance of the mechanisms accountable for pulmonary inflammatory reaction which is mast cell‐dependent.…”

“…The increase in the thickness of the adventitial layer of bronchioles is a confirmation of the development of the inflammatory process in the connective tissue, and, as a consequence, the development of stromal edema and disorganization of fibrous elements in the connective tissue of the bronchial wall. A similar trend of morphological changes in the bronchioles is observed in the studies of other scientists [1,2,3,16]. The most significant changes in the terminal bronchioles, confirmed statistically, found on the 36th day of the experiment in the form of thickening of the mucosal and adventitial layers, is a consequence of muscular hypertrophy and edema of the connective tissue stroma in terminal bronchioles.…”

“… 34 These results make evident that S. striata extract have good potential in modulating Th2 cytokines and therefore, can be utilised as an immunomodulatory agent for allergic asthma. Almohawes and Alruhaimi 35 reported that of hydro-alcoholic extract of Lavandula dentata ( L. dentata ) reduced the serum levels of IgE, triglycerides, total cholesterol and glucose in guinea pig with OVA-induced asthma model. Moreover, it also attenuated the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and restored the glutathione (GSH) levels in the lungs tissue.…”
