Effect of Laser Scribing on Soft Magnetic Properties of Conventional Grain-Oriented Silicon Steel

Abstract: The present work investigates the influence of laser scribing of grain-oriented silicon steel on the improvement of its soft magnetic properties via magnetic domains modification. The experimental material was represented by conventional Fe-3%Si grain-oriented electrical steel that was taken directly from industrial line after the final box annealing. The laser scribing treatments were applied onto the material surface in order to induce thermal stresses having crucial influence on the magnetic domains refinem… Show more

“…13 Our previous work 14 was focused on optimizing the laser scribing conditions of Fe-3%Si electrical steel sheets for single pulse laser regimes. The present work represents an extended and continuing research study to our preliminary investigation 15 of the effects of continues fibre laser processing on magnetic domains structure and surface changes of the same material in correlation with its resulting soft magnetic properties measured in AC magnetic field.…”

“…It should be mentioned that laser irradiation can cause a change in the internal stress induced by thermal heating [8], and that a simultaneous thermal effect can also occur for laser scribing, especially with longer pulses [9]. The thermal induced stress study is under investigation and will be developed elsewhere.…”

“…Not only the quality of the cutting surface expressed by the individual zones but also the change of the properties of the cut material in the area of cut (hardening of material) has a considerable influence on the so-called watt losses of the rotating electrical machines [4,7].…”

“…There are new methods proposed and presented in the contemporary literature and the contributions. Methods of production of the rotor and stator laminations bound into the bundles by plasma arc cutting, laser cutting and waterjet cutting [6][7][8]. Considering the ability of the technology of laser cutting, or waterjet cutting, we must point out that even though better properties can be achieved in terms of the surface in the area of cut, these kinds of technologies can be used only in piece and batch production.…”
