Effect of laser diode light irradiation on growth capability of human hair follicle dermal papilla cells

Abstract: Low level laser therapy is widely used to relieve pain and inflammation, and to restore cellular functions. The photons of light are absorbed by mitochondria in cells, leading to an increase in the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), nitric oxide release, blood flow, and reactive oxygen species (ROS). This study proposed the use of a laser diode array at 808 nm to stimulate the proliferation and to activate the functions of dermal papilla cells, which were an important part of the hair growth cycle. Th… Show more

“…The KRT family is related to the degree of curl and shape of horsehair ( Morgenthaler et al, 2017 ). VCAN is a marker gene for hair papilla cells, and its growth rate is not affected by external light intensity ( Jampa-Ngern et al, 2017 ). FOXN1 may affect the growth of secondary hair follicles in Cashmere goats ( Zhang et al, 2019c ).…”

“…The hDPCs regulate the development of human hair follicles, and the Wnt/β-catenin pathway is considered to be essential in maintaining hair-inducing activity of hDPCs [9]. To the best of our knowledge, the feasibility of using ELF-EMF on hDPCs has not yet been published.…”

“…Hair disorders such as hair loss (alopecia), androgenic alopecia, or excessive hair growth (hirsutism, hypertrichosis) may impact the social and psychological well-being of an individual [1,2]. Various agents, including herbal and natural extracts [3][4][5], growth factors, cytokines [6,7], placental extract, stem cells [8], conditioned medium, peptides, hormones, lipid nanocarrier, light, physical stimulation [9], androgens and their analogs, stress-serum, and chemotherapeutic agents, have been examined for their hair-growth-modulating effects in hDPCs. Nevertheless, alopecia is an exceedingly prevalent condition which affects men and women of all ages.…”

“…Low Level Laser Light Therapy (LLLT) is widely used as alternative medical treatment in wound healing and to relieve pain and inflammation. The effects of light therapy on hair growth have been investigated via DPCs . In addition, electromagnetic field resulted in stimulation of DPCs activity .…”
