Effect of L-carnitine on the expression of the apoptotic genes Bcl-2 and Bax

Abstract: Objective: The genes Bcl-2 and Bax play important roles in apoptosis. Many studies have shown that formalin has a strong deleterious effect on male fertility and can induce apoptosis. L-carnitine has been reported to potentially reverse the negative effects of formalin, leading to improved spermatogenesis. In this study, we examined the levels of expression of Bcl-2 and Bax in mice treated with formalin and L-carnitine.Methods: Thirty adult BALB/c mice were categorized into three groups. The mice in the contro… Show more

“…In a study involving rats, L-carnitine taken before doxorubicin, a chemotherapy drug, partially preserved the acrosome integrity of sperm [45]. In another study on mice, L-carnitine raises Bcl-2 levels and reduces Bax expression, indicating that this compound may inhibit apoptosis [46]. Several studies on L-carnitine involved also antimicrobials, anti-inflammatory drugs or pentoxifylline [47][48][49][50].…”

“…BCL‐2 protein, as a proto‐oncogene in germ cells, is involved in the regulation of cell apoptosis. 23 Thus, this protein is generally involved in inhibiting cellular apoptosis. If BCL ‐ 2 gene expression is reduced, the process of programmed cell death or apoptosis begins with activation of other oncogenes such as P53 .…”

“…Apoptosis has been documented as dispensation over several machineries, including amendment of the intracellular mitochondrial depended pathway to stimulate the caspase cascade activation [44]. When the over production of ROS sprightly induces proaptotic mediators leads to apoptosis [45]. ZnO NPs treatment arbitrated apoptotic protein appearance was studied using western blotting analysis.…”
