Effect of Kinesio taping on elbow muscle strength in healthy individuals: A randomized trial1

Abstract: The triceps muscle is appropriate for studying the effects of kinesiotape on muscle strength because elbow extension is provided by only one fusiform-shaped muscle. The results of this study did not show any significant changes in immediate or delayed muscle strength according to the initial measurements and between-group assessments.

“…Our results demonstrated no or little changes in grip strength of the dominant hand immediately, 30 and 60 minutes after KT in the forearm extensor and flexor areas compared to placebo KT, which is compatible with most recent power grip studies (15,16,(20)(21)(22). As well, the findings of several studies on the strength of other muscles, with the exception of hand grip muscles did not suggest beneficial effects for KT (23,24). The metaanalysis conducted by Csapo et al also announced that KT has no or negligible impact on muscle performance (17).…”

“…These results, however, are consistent with recent findings of no strength enhancing effects immediately following KT in healthy populations. Several studies could not find positive effects of KT on muscle strength in healthy participants for different muscle groups (Cai et al., 2016; Karahan et al., 2017; Strutzenberger et al., 2016; Vercelli et al., 2012), and even a recent meta‐analysis concluded that KT to facilitate muscular contraction had no or only negligible effects on muscle strength (Csapo & Alegre, 2015). However, there are a few recent studies that have investigated the effects of KT on muscle endurance that have suggested that KT influences processes that lead to muscle fatigue positively.…”

“…KT'ın kas kuvveti üzerine etkisi henüz bilinmemektedir. Karahan AY ve arkadaşlarının 25 yaptıkları çalışmada triceps kasına Y şeklinde KT uygulamanın kas gücüne olumlu etkisi gösterilmemiştir.…”
