Effect of Irregularity on Static Deformation of Elastic Half-Space

Abstract: In the present paper, the problem of two-dimensional static deformation of an isotropic elastic half-space of irregular thickness has been studied using the eigenvalue approach, following a Fourier transform. The irregularity is expressed by a rectangular shape. As an application, the normal line-load acting inside an irregular isotropic half-space has been considered. Further, the results for the displacements have been derived in the closed form. To examine the effect of irregularity, variations of the displ… Show more

“…The present problem is an improvement of the earlier papers studied by Garg et al [8] for regular orthotropic elastic medium and Salim [10] for irregular (rectangular) isotropic medium. The corresponding results for normal loading obtained by Garg et al [8] can be recovered from our results as a particular case.…”

“…By using Eigen value method Singh et al [9] obtained the deformation field for the monoclinic medium in the transformed domain with plane interface. Salim [10] studied the effect of rectangular irregularity on the static deformation of initially stressed and unstressed isotropic elastic medium respectively. In isotropic medium the Eigen values cannot be distinct.…”

“…It can also contribute to the theoretical consideration of the seismic and volcanic sources since it can account for the deformation fields in the entire volume surrounding the source region. [8] Selim [9] studied the effect of irregularity on static deformation of an isotropic elastic half-space. Madan et al [10] studied the static response of transversely isotropic elastic medium with irregular boundaries present in the medium Madan and Gaba [11] have studied the effect of different type of irregularities on the variation of displacements and stresses in an orthotropic elastic media due to normal line-loading by using eigen value approach with distinct eigen values.…”
