7-Methyl-1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (mTBD) has useful catalytic properties and can form an ionic liquid when mixed with an acid. Despite its potential usefulness, no data on its thermodynamic and transport properties are currently available in the literature. Here we present the first reliable public data on the liquid vapor pressure (temperature from 318.23 K to 451.2 K and pressure from 11.1 Pa to 10 000 Pa), liquid compressed density (293.15 K to 473.15 K and 0.092 MPa to 15.788 MPa), liquid isobaric heat capacity (312.48 K to 391.50 K), melting properties, liquid thermal conductivity (299.0 K to 372.9 K), liquid refractive index (293.15 K to 343.15 K), liquid viscosity (290.79 K to 363.00 K), liquid-vapor enthalpy of vaporization (318.23 K to 451.2 K), liquid thermal expansion coefficient (293.15 K to 473.15 K), and liquid isothermal compressibility of mTBD (293.15 K to 473.15). The properties of mTBD were compared with those of other relevant compounds, including 1,5-diazabicyclo(4.3.0)non-5-ene (DBN), 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7ene (DBU), and 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine (TMG). We used the PC-SAFT equation of state to model the thermodynamic properties of mTBD, DBN, DBU, and TMG. The PC-SAFT parameters were optimized using experimental data.

Styrene-maleic acid polymer-bound lipid bilayer nanodiscs have been investigated and characterized by electrokinetic chromatography. Linear solvation energy relationship analysis was employed to characterize the changes in solvation environment of nanodiscs of varied belt to lipid ratio, belt polymer chemistry and molecular weight, and lipid composition. Increases in the lipid to belt polymer ratio resulted in smaller, more cohesive nanodiscs with greater electrophoretic mobility. Nanodisc structures with belt polymers of different chemistry and molecular weight were compared and showed only minor changes in solvent characteristics and selectivity consistent with changes in structure of the lipid bilayer. Seven phospholipid and sphingomyelin nanodiscs of different lipid composition were characterized. Changes in lipid head group structure had a significant effect on bilayer-solute interactions. In most cases, changes in alkyl tail structure had no discernible effect on solvation environment aside from those explained by changes in the gel-liquid transition temperature. Comparison to vesicles of similar lipid composition show only minor differences in solvation environment, likely due to differences in lipid composition and bilayer curvature. Together these results provide evidence that the dominant solute-nanodisc interactions are with the lipid bilayer and that head group chemistry has a greater impact on bilayer-solute interactions than alkyl tail or belt polymer structure. Nanodisc electrokinetic chromatography is demonstrated to allow characterization of solute interactions with lipid bilayers of varied composition.

The worldwide use of ionic liquids (ILs) is steadily increasing, and even though they are often referred to as "green solvents" they have been reported to be toxic, especially toward aquatic organisms. In this work, we thoroughly study two phosphonium ILs; octyltributylphosphonium chloride ([P8444]Cl) and tributyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium chloride ([P14444]Cl). Firstly, the critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) of the ILs were determined with fluorescence spectroscopy and the optical pendant drop method in order to gain an understanding of the aggregation behavior of the ILs. Secondly, a biomimicking system of negatively charged unilamellar liposomes was used in order to study the effect of the ILs on biomembranes. Changes in the mechanical properties of adsorbed liposomes were determined by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements with silica coated quartz crystal sensors featuring a polycation layer. The results confirmed that both ILs were able to incorporate and alter the biomembrane structure. The membrane disrupting effect was emphasized with an increasing concentration and alkyl chain length of the ILs. In the extreme case, the phospholipid membrane integrity was completely compromised.
