Effect of intravenous lidocaine infusion on perioperative cellular immunity and the quality of postoperative recovery in breast cancer patients: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract: Background: Breast cancer has become the most common malignancy worldwide. Experimental and, retrospective, clinical data indicate that anaesthetic technique might influence the risk of metastasis after cancer surgery by modulating the immune system. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of perioperative lidocaine injection on immune cells such as T lymphocytes and natural killer cells (NK cells) and the quality of postoperative recovery in breast cancer patients and to propose new ideas and r… Show more

“…Moreover, in patients treated with lidocaine the number of circulating NK cells decreased less rapidly in the postoperative period than in the control group. 103 In the study of Yardeni et al . 65 women undergoing hysterectomy were allocated to receive either intravenous lidocaine or placebo.…”

“…In one RCT, 68 patients undergoing breast cancer excision received intravenous lidocaine infusion or placebo perioperatively. Natural killer (NK) and T-cell subsets were analyzed at baseline and postoperatively – lidocaine was associated with preserved NK and T-cell immune function, a potentially beneficial anticancer effect [47]. In another RCT, 60 patients undergoing video-assisted thoracic surgery for early-stage non small-cell lung cancer received perioperative lidocaine infusion or placebo [48].…”

“…50 In breast cancer patients, intravenous infusion of lidocaine preserved the cellular function, reduced opioid consumption, improved post-operative analgesia, and improved the quality of recovery. 51 Overall, lidocaine exhibits analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, it decreases opioid consumption and improves gastrointestinal function in cancer patients.…”
