Effect of intravenous antibiotics on exercise tolerance (3‐min step test)) in cystic fibrosis*

Abstract: Most children with cystic fibrosis (CF) feel better and display more energy after a course of intravenous antibiotics (IVABs), but this is not always reflected by a satisfactory improvement in lung function. We assessed the change in exercise tolerance after treatment with IVABs using the 3-min step test, and compared it with changes in spirometric lung function and arterial oxygen saturation (SaO(2)). Thirty-six children (mean age, 13.8 years) were enrolled from two tertiary CF centers during an inpatient sta… Show more

“…Although the 3-minute step test has been evaluated extensively in children, [7][8][9]16 there have been few data regarding its utility in adults with CF. The current study shows that the test was acceptable to adults and could be performed by almost all participants, regardless of disease severity.…”

“…Despite the lack of association between heart rate or dyspnea score and longer term outcomes, these variables are sensitive to change following intravenous antibiotic treatment in children with CF. 9 These variables may therefore be more suited to evaluating change following an intervention.…”

“…It is legally compulsory in Italy for all persons wishing to engage in competitive sports [13]. The 3-min step test is also used to assess exercise capacity in children with cystic fibrosis [8,14,15], to evaluate the effect of a course of intravenous antibiotics on exercise tolerance [16], to study candidates for lung transplantation [17], and to determine the risk of oxygen desaturation during exercise [18].…”
