Effect of intraurethral administration of atracurium besylate in male cats with urethral plugs

Abstract: The results of this study indicate that in adult male cats with urethral plugs, urethral administration of atracurium besylate increases the proportion of animals in which the obstruction is removed at the first attempt and reduces the time required to remove the urethral plugs.

“…Atracurium, which is chemically stable in saline solution (Pramar and others 1996), has been used successfully in cats via intraurethral administration for the clinical management of urethral plugs (Galluzzi and others 2012). Muscle weakness or any other side effect related to atracurium administration was not detected in that study.…”

“…Sterile lubricant should be used and lidocaine can be mixed with this to provide analgesia within the urethra. Some authors also suggest instilling a neuromuscular blocker into the urethra, such as atracurium besilate (Galluzzi and others 2012). An assistant should extrude the penis from the prepuce.…”

“…More recently, Galluzzi et al . (2012) demonstrated that intraurethral administration of a non‐depolarising neuromuscular blocking drug, atracurium, before retrograde flushing, facilitates the clinical management of urethral plugs by reducing the overall time needed to remove the obstruction. They reported no adverse reactions from the atracurium administration.…”
