Field experiment was conducted during 2018 and 2019 rainy seasons at the experimental farm of Potato Programme, Kuru, National Root Crops Research Institute Umudike, Abia State of Nigeria. Kuru is located on (Lat. 09o 44’N, Long 08o 44” E, 1239.4m amsl) in the northern Guinea Savanna Ecological zone of Nigeria. The experiment was conducted to determine the effects of various rates of nitrogen (0, 60 and 120 kg N/ha), wood ash (0, 2.5 and 5.0 t/ha) and intra-row spacing (20, 30 and 40 cm) on stand count and number of seed tubers of potato. A split plot design was used where the factorial combinations of N and intra-row spacing were assigned to the main plots, while wood ash was assigned to sub plots. The treatments were replicated three (3) times. The result revealed that application of 60 - 120 kg N/ha and 2.5 - 5.0 t/ha wood ash enhanced crop growth and yield of potato like stand count and number of seed tuber, respectively. Therefore, during manure application of Nitrogen at 60 kg N/ha with wood ash at 5.0 t/ha and at reduced intra-row spacing (20cm and 30cm) is recommended for cultivation Potato in the region.

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the growth of seedling tubers produced from true potato seed (TPS) for selection of superior clones to produce seed tubers in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. A completely randomised design (CRD) was used. The treatment consisted of 15 seed tuber clones produced from TPS and replicated 3 times; each replicate consisted of five plant stands. The parameters assessed included establishment rate, number of above-ground stems per plant, number of leaves per plant, mean plant height, mean number of tubers, mean tuber weight and dry matter content. Generally, the clones varied significantly in all the vegetative and yield parameters assessed. Clones 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 11 had a significantly higher number of tubers than clone 10. Clone 1 had the highest mean tuber weight while clone 4 had the least. Clone 10 which had the lowest number of tubers resulted in the highest dry matter. It is concluded that clones 1,2,3,5,6,7 and 11 can be selected for high multiplication ratio, yield and dry matter content.

Knowledge of the structure and function of sensory system of aphids, as well as understanding of their behavior, enabled the development of different methods of aphid collection, flight monitoring and control. The first methods used for collecting aphids were the colored water traps, most commonly of yellow color. Methods based on olfactory perception in order to reduce the abundance of aphids in the field have been developed later. These methods are mainly based on sowing different plant species, such as border crops, trap crops and intercropping. Chemicals, such as pheromones and essential oils, have also found practical application.
