Effect of interparticle interaction on the low temperature oxidation of CO over size-selected Au nanocatalysts supported on ultrathin TiC films

Abstract: This work aims to get insight into the influence of interparticle interactions on catalysis. The low temperature CO oxidation is used as a model reaction. A strong dependence of the catalytic activity and stability of gold nanoparticles uniformly dispersed on polycrystalline TiC films was observed as a function of the interparticle distance. Two samples with similar height distributions ($2 nm), but with different average interparticle distances ($30 and $80 nm), were synthesized using diblock copolymer encaps… Show more

“…Naturally oxidized Si(111) wafers and ultrathin Ti films (15 nm) electron-beam deposited on Si(111) have been used as NP supports. Further details on this preparation method can be found in refs [43][44][45][46][47][48]. A summary of the synthesis parameters used is given in Table 1.…”

“…In order to gain insight into these topics, we have used micelle encapsulation methods [43][44][45][46][47][48] to synthesize size-and shape-selected gold nanoclusters supported on thin SiO 2 and TiO 2 films. Morphological characterization was conducted by atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the decomposition of oxidized gold species, formed upon in situ O 2 plasma exposure, was investigated in UHV by XPS.…”

“…19 In the latter, the attachment strength of CO on the TiC(001) surface or Au clusters is not very different, 20 but O 2 adsorption energy is higher on the Au-TiC(001) system. It should be borne in mind that titanium carbide is a cumbersome support to be used in applications due to the difficulty in obtaining nanoparticles under working conditions.…”

“…9. In general, the bond between Au and the TiC(001) surface exhibits very little ionic character, but there is a substantial polarization of electrons around Au [43] which enhances the chemical activity of this metal [10,44,45]. Figure 9 displays electron-polarization function (ELF) [28] plots for Au 2 and Au 4 on TiC(001).…”
