Effect of interleukin-1 beta on ovulation in the in vitro perfused rabbit ovary.

Abstract: Interleukin-1 (IL-1), a prominent 17-kilodalton member of a group of immune mediators referred to as cytokines, is secreted by a variety of immuno- and nonimmunocompetent cells. As IL-1 is an established mediator of inflammation, and ovulation may constitute an inflammatory-like reaction, consideration may be given to the possibility that IL-1 may play an intermediary role in the ovulatory process. Such a hypothesis is supported by the recent demonstration of the gonadotropin-dependent preovulatory induction o… Show more

“…IL-1 also increased the productions of prostaglandins [11], hyaluronic acid and proteoglycan [14] and gelatinase [15], which may be related to changes associated with the ovulatory process. In fact, IL-1f3 stimulated ovulation in rabbits [23], and an anti-ovulatory effect of IL-1 receptor antagonist was demonstrated in rats [24,25], but the effect of IL-1 on ovarian functions is dependent on the stage of follicular development. For example, IL-1 inhibit- Table 2.…”

“…115 Similarly IL-1b perfusion in the rabbit ovary revealed a block in embryo development at the four-cell stage upon IL-1b stimulation. 116 It is therefore possible that NALPs and inflammatory caspases may link some aspects of innate immunity and reproductive biology (gamete maturation and early stages of embryo development). This is analogous to the proposed function of Xa13, a resistance gene that play a role both in pollen development and disease resistance in rice, 117 and for TIP49a, a regulator of the resistance gene RPM1 (a NLR-like resistance gene) that is required for both regulation of resistance and gamete viability in Arabidopsis.…”

“…IL-1b has been shown to promote several ovarian events associated with ovulation, including biosynthesis of prostaglandins, plasminogen activator and proteoglycans (8). In perfused rat (9,10) and rabbit (11) ovaries, treatment with IL-1b was found to increase ovulation rate.…”
