Effect of instructional software on achievement of undergraduate students in Digital Signal Processing

Abstract: Traditional tools used in education, are increasingly more complemented with computer based Instructional software. This paper presents an interactive approach for teaching the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) course. The effect of the Instructional Software on the achievement of students in the subject of DSP is compared to the conventional teaching method. ß

“…Since computer prices decrease and it is possible to find easily variable versatile software programs, computeraided education has become a part of both classroom and laboratory experiments [12]. With new technological innovations, computers have been benefited as auxiliary equipments and teaching tools in many universities [13]. The uses of computers make a positive impact in lectures and laboratory work and also contribute economically towards mitigating the education cost [1].…”

“…New concepts and applications such as computer‐aided instruction (CAI), computer‐aided learning (CAL), computer‐based instruction (CBI), computer‐based training (CBT), distance education, distance learning, e‐learning, web‐based learning have been widely used depending on development of information technology and internet. In the literature, there are many studies belonging to the field of engineering : communication , computer [21,36], control [38,42], electrical machines [2,20], power electronics [19,50], power systems [18,29], robotics [6,15], image processing , digital signal processing , etc. Studies which belong to signals and systems concept can be summarized as follows: Teaching signals and systems topics containing continuous and discrete convolution, Laplace transforms, z‐transforms, Fourier transforms, analog and digital filter design, etc.…”

“…Finally, there are many software learning tools fully oriented to virtual laboratories, but they can be also useful for complementing real-laboratory activities; for example [36][37][38][39][40][41], which are not web-based (although [37,40] are available through the Internet), as well as [10,17,42,43], web-based. Particularly, among the mentioned articles we remark the contributions to practical applications of Digital Signal Processing specifically in the acoustics laboratory, namely [20][21][22]24,35], as well as Digital Signal Processing for images or in general, namely [23,[25][26][27][28]32,39,41,42].…”
