“…The minipigs go into clinically evident estrus as per vaginal smear cytology 5 days after suspension of treatment (Lorenzen et al, ). In pigs and minipigs, the term estrus is primarily used to indicate the period of sexual behavior of the sow (Holtz et al, ) and is not really correlated to specific histologic features within the female reproductive organs (De Rijk et al, ).…”

“…There were no significant treatment differences for mean litter size (total born or alive) or mean number of litters produced per sow over the 4 parities (Table 1). hormonal treatment, and confirming previous findings (Holtz et al 1999;Kirkwood et 149 al. 2000).…”

“…There are limited data comparing productivity of sows that were or were not originally induced to cycle with 51 gonadotrophins. In a relatively poorly performing herd, gonadotrophin induction of first 52 estrus with breeding at the following estrus had no impact on sow retention during 3 53 parities (Holtz et al 1999). It has further been documented that breeding relatively older 54 and heavier gilts at a gonadotrophin-induced estrus did not compromise long-term 55 productivity .…”
