Effect of insecticide-treated potato plants on aphid behavior andpotato virus Yacquisition

Abstract: One systemic and two contact insecticides were effective at intoxicating aphids and reducing probing behavior soon after application. Some insecticides might sporadically reduce the spread of PVY either by modifying the behavior or reducing PVY acquisition, but their action is likely limited to a short period of time after application.

“…Aphid behaviour can be modified by insecticides which could potentially play a role in non-persistent virus transmission (Boquel et al 2015 ;Roberts et al 1993 ). At sub-lethal doses pyrethroids may enhance virus spread due to a repellent effect, causing an increase in aphid activity (Gibson et al 1982 ;Robert et al 2000 ;Roberts et al 1993 ).…”

“…In addition, the influence of insecticides on aphid behaviour may vary between different types of insecticides and aphid species. Lambda-cyhalothrin, a contact insecticide, increased the number of Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas), leaving the plant, reduced the number of R. padi probing treated leaflets but had no effect on A. fabae (Boquel et al 2015 ). In contrast, dimethoate, a systemic insecticide, had no effect on aphid behaviour (Boquel et al 2015 ).…”

“…Winged aphids, by contrast, are responsible for spreading the virus as they fly from plant to plant and field to field (Broadbent, ,b; Woodford, ; Robert et al ., ). Use of insecticides, while effective in controlling the vectors, seems to have a low impact on the spread of PVY because of the short time needed to transmit the nonpersistent virus (Shanks & Chapman, ; Gibson et al ., ; Boiteau et al ., ; Lowery & Boiteau, ; Boquel et al ., ). Aphids often transmit PVY prior to being killed by the insecticide (Perring et al ., ).…”
