Effect of inorganic carbonate and organic matter in thermal treatment of mercury-contaminated soil

Abstract: Thermal treatment of mercury (Hg)-contaminated soil was studied to investigate the desorption behavior of Hg at different temperatures. The soil samples were collected from two locations with different land uses around the mine and industrial site. The effect of soil properties such as inorganic carbonate minerals and organic matter content on Hg desorption was investigated to understand the thermal desorption process. The effect of soil composition on Hg desorption showed that behavior at 100 °C was similar, … Show more

“…The spectrum of the original soil sample exhibited bands at 3696, 3619, and 3421 cm −1 (O-H stretching); 1636 and 1419cm −1 (C=N stretching); 1031, 912, 778, 694, and 534 cm −1 (Si-O stretching); and 470 cm −1 (Fe-O stretching). The Si-O stretching vibration band corresponded to quartz; these quartz bands were prominent in the spectrum of the soil [7]. Furthermore, the peaks at 2917 and 2849 cm −1 were ascribed to the asymmetric C-H stretching vibrations (-CH2 and -CH) in aliphatic hydrocarbons [35], which corresponded to organic matter.…”

“…Soils near smelters accumulate contaminants and can be analyzed to investigate the long-term effects of metal contaminants on soils [6]. The accumulation of metals is significantly affected by the contents of organic matter, clay minerals, and Fe oxides in the soil [7]. Generally, fine soil fractions can adsorb more contaminants than coarse soil fractions through various complexation reactions because of their higher surface-to-mass ratios [8].…”

“…The absorption band at 874 cm − 1 was assigned to CO 3 . The bands at 1420 and 874 cm − 1 were assigned to the asymmetric stretching and in-plane bending of carbonate in amorphous calcite, respectively (Cho et al, 2021). The peak at 790 cm − 1 was assigned to Si-O.…”

“…It has been proven that when the temperature drops below 200 0 C, the effectiveness of remediation is significantly reduced, since the complete decomposition of pesticides does not occur. At the same time, when the temperature rises above 350 0 C, soil degradation and loss of nutrients can be observed, so it is necessary to choose the optimal temperature taking into account these factors [4].…”

“…Studies show that heat treatment can lead to changes in soil structure, depending on the type and duration of treatment. In addition, a change in soil pH is possible due to a decrease in the content of organic matter and water, as well as an effect on the content of organic matter and other elements that are important for plant development and human health [4,8].…”
