Effect of Inlet and Geometrical Parameters on the Melting of PCM Capsules of Elliptical Cross Section.

Abstract: This paper focuses on the melting of phase change material capsulated in the elliptical cross-section horizontal cylinder under convective boundary conditions. Different parameters are discussed, namely, the HTF inlet temperature and velocity and the axes ratio of the capsule cross-section. The effect of HTF inlet temperature, inlet velocity, and the capsule axes ratio was studied using the CFD software FLUENT 6.3.26. A comparison between the numerical and experimental results was made for the system. The expe… Show more

“…Mostafa et al [44] aimed to enhance the PCM melting efficiency in storage via the use of novel fins, combining rectangular and triangular shapes. They investigated the influence of triangular fin height on the melting rate, and explored the effects of various storage hot wall temperatures and PCM materials on the process.…”

“…Some researchers recommended plate configurations from their findings [25], whereas other studies recommended copper pipes [26,27]. The cross section of an elliptical capsule was found to have impact on the melting behavior of PCM whereas the increase in air velocity had negligible effect [28]. An organic RT26 PCM was investigated in circular and elliptical capsules, to show improved heat transfer efficiency by 27%, 49% and 58% for eccentricities, 0.02, 0.04 and 0.06, respectively [29].…”
