Effect of initial blank temperature in hot press forming towards 22MnB5 springback failure

Abstract: The springback failure of ultra-high strength boron steel (22MnB5) in hot press forming (HPF) process was characterized under bending and membrane conditions. Hot press forming for U–shaped parts with ultra-high strength boron steel were experimented and simulated to study the effect of initial blank temperatures on springback failure in the automotive industry. The results specify the various preheated temperature of 22MnB5 blank effect toward springback occurrences with reference to hot press forming dies de… Show more

“…The blank sheet then will be put through austenitization and then transfers to calibration and quenching. This stage was the inherent stage for the process chain to ensure the required high strength properties achieved [18]. There were three recognized ways to achieve lightweight automobile which includes optimizing vehicle frames and structures, making vehicle body out of new and alternative materials such as ultrahigh strength steel to reduce the vehicle mass, and adopting advanced manufacturing techniques for automobile lightweight such as thickness-gradient high strength steel (HSS) or metal-based compound plates by hot press forming.…”

“…Therefore, different methods of sheet metal forming have been researched and developed. This tendency has made a big motivation for studies on sheet technology to be done with considerable achievements [1][2][3][4][5][6]. In sheet metal forming process, thinning variations occur in most areas of the products and considerably affect the product quality, especially in drawing operation [2].…”

“…Giorleo [6] focused the research evaluating the preform geometry influence on an industrial Ring Rolling process; the results showed that a decrease of the starting preform ring height could guarantee less energy and loads, less defects and material saving. Zhu [7] investigated different geometries and ring dimensions to find optimal blank design principle for Axial-section in Ring Rolling. The effect of initial blank temperature was analyzed by Ng [8] while the forming limit by Mianroodi [9] in case of mild steel.…”
