Effect of increasing manganese concentration in nutrient solution on the antioxidant activity, vitamin C, lycopene and polyphenol contents of tomato fruit

Abstract: This study evaluated the effect of increasing manganese (Mn) nutrition on the content of antioxidative compounds such as vitamin C, lycopene and polyphenols, and the antioxidant activity of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., cvs 'Alboney F1' and 'Emotion F') fruit. Plants were grown in rockwool using a nutrient solution with the following content of Mn (mg dm): 0.0, 0.3, 0.6, 1.2, 2.4, 4.8, 9.6 and 19.2. The level of vitamin C and lycopene decreased with the increasing Mn nutrition. Since the colour of fru… Show more

“…Our findings suggested a significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) between TPC and HMs (Pb and Mn) concentrations in summer and winter ( Figure 6). This result is identical with previous studies, which showed a remarkable increasing in the TPC content significantly enhanced by high level of Mn treatment [59].…”

“…Brotomax is a foliar fertilizer that contains urea nitrogen, copper, manganese and zinc . An opposite trend observed at 150 DAT appears to confirm the results of study by Muzolf‐Panek et al . on tomatoes showing how different levels of Mn nutrition may lead to total phenolic levels that do not correlate linearly with increasing concentrations of Mn in nutrient solutions.…”

“…Brotomax is a foliar fertilizer that contains urea nitrogen, copper, manganese and zinc. 7 An opposite trend observed at 150 DAT appears to confirm the results of study by Muzolf-Panek et al 54 on tomatoes showing how different levels of Mn nutrition may lead to total phenolic levels that do not correlate linearly with increasing concentrations of Mn in nutrient solutions. Furthermore, it is also possible to attribute a sharp decrease in leaf total phenolic concentration and oleuropein concentration for all treatments between 90 and 150 DAT as a plant physiological response to greenhouse temperature fluctuations functioning as a stressor in this experiment.…”

“…The tomato fruit (Solanum lycopersicum L.) has been identified as a functional and nutraceutical food [1]. This fruit is an important source of bioactive compounds such as vitamins, carotenoids, and phenolic compounds, which produce a greater antioxidant activity that represents a direct benefit to human health [2]. Besides its importance to the human diet, it is the second most commercially consumed vegetable after the potato [3].…”
