Effect of immunoglobulin G concentration in dairy cow colostrum and calf blood serum on Cryptosporidium spp. invasion in calves

Abstract: Aim: The research aimed to test the association between the level of immunoglobulin G (IgG) in bovine colostrum and calf blood serum and to evaluate its relation to Cryptosporidium spp. invasion in calves. Materials and Methods: Fresh colostrum and fecal specimens from cows (n=114) as well as blood and fecal specimens from newborn calves (n=114) were collected in the dairy cattle farm. Investigated calves were separated from their mothers directly after birth and received 2 L of colostrum in two separ… Show more

“…However, Derbakova et al . [ 21 ] did not record a relationship between the level of IgG in bovine colostrum and the likelihood of Cryptosporidium spp. infection in calves and suggested that innate and adaptive immunity play more significant roles in immune responses to Cryptosporidium species than mother passive transfers of immunity to the offspring.…”

“…Структура плаценти корів відокремлює кров матері й плоду, що, у свою чергу, перешкоджає передачі Ig, які відповідають за імунний захист організму. У зв'язку з цим телята народжуються без Ig, які вони можуть отримати лише шляхом пасивного перенесення з молозива (McGrath et al, 2016;Masiuk et al, 2019;Derbakova et al, 2020), тому, вочевидь, заходи, спрямовані на унормування молозивного періоду, вкрай важливі для здоров'я нащадків.…”

“…The physicochemical, biological, and immunologic features of immunoglobulins are categorized into classes (Puppel et al, 2019). The Ig classes include IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, and IgM; nevertheless, most of them are only weakly present in colostrum and circulating immunoglobulins, particularly immunoglobulin G (IgG), play an important role in overall host defence against environmental antigens (Derbakova et al, 2020). Factors affecting first colostrum IgG content that affect colostrum quality include the time between calving and milking, the dam's age, the length of the dry period, the metabolic status of the dam and the calving season (Zwierzchowski et al, 2020).…”
