Effect ofSalvia mirzayaniion the immune system and induction of apoptosis in peripheral blood lymphocytes

Abstract: In this study, the immunomodulatory effects of Salvia mirzayanii were investigated. Study of the effect of this plant on activated human peripheral blood lymphocytes showed stimulatory effects at lower concentrations and inhibitory effects at higher ones (p < 0.01). In flow cytometry analysis, accumulation of apoptotic cells in the sub-G1 phase of the cell cycle of the mitogen-treated lymphocytes exposed to the inhibitory doses of the extract was observed. DNA fragmentation analysis of these cells showed a typ… Show more

“…The induction of apoptosis by the extract was additionally proven by the typical DNA laddering in internucleosomal DNA fragmentation analysis of mitogen-stimulated human lymphocytes. 8 Salvia mirzayanii methanol extract was also injected to mice to assay the effects on the humoral immunity as measured by thickness of the foot pad after challenge. Outcomes revealed improvement of the response at both primary and secondary exposure to the antigen after administration of lower concentrations of extract.…”

“…After a dose of 100 mg/kg, the effect was decreased. 8 Because of the fact that teuclatriol and spathulenol, isolated in an activity-guided approach from the extract, showed considerable antiproliferative effects on human peripheral lymphocytes with IC 50 values of 74.2 + 5.4 and 85.4 + 11.08 mg/mL, respectively, the immunomodulation by SM was attributed to these compounds. 19,21…”

“…mirzayanii (Marv-e-Talkh in Persian) and S. macrosiphon (Marvak in Persian) are two well-known endemic species of the Salvia genus in Iran. S. mirzayanii has been used in Iranian folk medicine especially in Hormozgan and Kerman provinces for the treatment of diabetes, spasms, gastrointestinal disorders, infections, and inflammations (18). Local healers in Iran still use S. mirzayanii as a tonic and astringent.…”

“…Various concentrations of the extract of this herb showed an inhibitory effect on the proliferation of lymphocytes. This inhibitory effect was due mainly to the ability of the extract to induce apoptosis in activated lymphocytes (Amirghofran et al ., 2010). In the present study, bioassay guided fractionation of Salvia mirzayanii was performed to identify the active compound/s for this effect.…”
