Effect of Carica papaya Extract toward Incised Wound Healing Process in Mice (Mus musculus) Clinically and Histologically

Abstract: Wound healing entails a sequence of complex biological processes, which is a protective function of the body that focuses on a quick recovery. Reducing wound healing time is crucial in a wound as it lowers the chance of infection and decreases complications and costs. Papaya extract was obtained by a maceration method. It contains papain enzyme, flavonoid, saponin, and alkaloid, which act as an anti-inflammatory, astringent substance, vasodilator, antioxidant, analgesic, with antifungal, and antibacterial prop… Show more

“…The concepts were further supported by in vivo studies evaluating different parts of Carica papaya on incised, burned, and diabetic wounds respectively. The recent findings show that Carica papaya fruit and seed extracts demonstrated dose-dependent increment in hydroxyproline, fibrillation, epithelial thickness, shortened wound contraction, and epithelialization time [ 69 , 70 , 71 , 72 ].…”

“…Cysteine endopeptidases including papain and chymopapain showed wound healing activity that can be attributed to their proteolytic wound debridement and antibacterial effects [ 63 , 64 , 70 , 72 ]. This was established by an in vivo study using papain-based wound cleanser.…”

“…The faster healing time reduces the possibility of complications in the injury, these in turn reduce the costs that may be involved in prolonging the treatment. 21 In the histopathological analysis of the groups that received the purple sweet potato gels, an active recovery of the stratum corneum, granular, spinous and basal cells is shown. These later will be in charge of replacing the dead epidermal cells.…”
