Effect of hydrophilicity of polyaniline particles on their electrorheology: Steady flow and dynamic behaviour

Abstract: A B S T R A C TElectrorheological properties of suspensions are considerably affected by hydrophilicity of suspension particles. As a model material, polyaniline base powder protonated with sulfamic, tartaric, or perfluo-rooctanesulfonic acids provided particles of various hydrophilicity. The experiments revealed that, in the absence of electric field, due to a good compatibility of hydrophobic polyaniline particles with sili-cone-oil medium, their interactions were limited and the viscosity of suspension was … Show more

“…Among them polyaniline (PANI) [8,9] and polypyrrole [10] are of special interest. Polyaniline, as a material for electrorheology, has been reported in many scientific papers due to its easy and inexpensive synthesis [5,8,[11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. Moreover, aniline-like oligomers with tuneable conductivities prepared by different reaction conditions or reaction substances have been introduced [19][20][21].…”

“…However, the higher MR performance is observed in core-shell particles system due to its lower magnetic field-off viscosity. This is probably due to more hydrophilic surface of mere CI than PPy-coated one and, consequently, worse particle compatibility with the hydrophobic oil medium [16].…”
