Effect of hydrophilic and hydrophobic cyclodextrins on the release of encapsulated allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) and their potential application for plastic film extrusion

Abstract: Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), a natural pungent flavor from wasabi and horseradish, is well-known antimicrobial agents against foodborne pathogens. However, its highly volatile nature and low thermal stability restrict its application in the food packaging industry. Also, its strong organoleptic characteristics hinder its application at a higher dosage. We encapsulated AITC in β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and triacetyl-β-CD (TA-β-CD) and evaluated the performance as slow releasing active compounds through low-density … Show more

“…Indeed, the values of σ b decreased in the PHBV containing CDs, with values between 9.04 MPa and 9.83 MPa, while the ɛ b values of PHBV films also decreased from 2.4% to 0.78 % due to presence of CDs and OEO. As reported by (Shin et al, 2019), the addition of -CD containing allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) reduced the tensile strength and elongation by 84% and 96%, respectively, of LDPE films obtained by extrusion. In another work, (Melendez-Rodriguez et al, 2019) reported an improvement of the elastic modulus and tensile strength of electrospun PHBV films when mesoporous silica nanoparticles containing eugenol were incorporated.…”

“…The inclusion complexes showed two mass losses, one below 100 °C corresponding to the loss of water from the cavity and another above 280 °C, which is attributed to the main thermal degradation of CDs (Aytac et al, 2017). Shin, Kathuria, & Lee (2019) reported similar results for triacetyl (TA) encapsulated in -CD, obtaining a T deg of 293.99 545°C for -CD and for the inclusion complex of TA--CD its T deg was 340.62 ºC. The thermal degradation of the PHBV films containing inclusion complexes increased slightly the value of T deg respect to the neat PHBV.…”

“…Shin et al. (2019) found that triacetyl‐β‐CD provided more sustained release of AITC than unmodified β‐CD. Another modification is via synthesizing CDs polymers using cross‐linkers to build a three‐dimensional network.…”

“…Likewise, active materials containing AITC have been validated in many different food stuffs, such as meat products ( 6 ), bakery ( 7 , 8 ), fruits, and vegetables ( 9 ). However, it has also been reported that high volatility of AITC could prevent a lasting effect over time ( 10 ).…”
