Effect of Hydrogen Peroxide and Anthraquinone on the Selectivity and Hexenuronic Acid Content of Mixed Tropical Hardwood Kraft Pulp during Oxygen Delignification

Abstract: In this study, the bleachability of commercial mixed tropical hardwood brown kraft pulp by oxygen delignification (O stage) was examined. It was found that the effective reduction of kappa number was limited to about 35%, and the pulp viscosity was 20.3 cP with a selectivity less than 0.60 and ISO brightness of ca. 43%. The selectivity and pulp brightness of the O stage were improved by adding H 2 O 2 (O P stage) because it decreased the kappa number to a greater extent. However, the addition of hydrogen perox… Show more

“…Thus, it can be seen that the selectivity curves of the two bleaching stages showed the same trend whereby the Op-stage method was improved by shifting towards the left (lower kappa number). Based on our previous results (Chong et al 2013a), the maximum bleaching selectivity of the Op-stage (0.71) was higher than that of the O-stage (0.53). These selectivity curves are used as reference lines for the following research to observe the effect of pre-treatment on tropical mixed hardwood kraft pulp after an ordinary or improved O-stage.…”

“…The selectivity of the medium consistency oxygen delignification stage improved by offering a greater effect on KaNo reduction, but induced more serious cellulose degradation (Chong et al, 2013). Reaction selectivity is commonly calculated as the ratio of the change in KaNo to the change in pulp viscosity during medium consistency oxygen delignification.…”
