Chelonus oculator Panzer is an egg-larval parasitoid of the cotton leaf worm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) with a broad geographical area. Four botanical insecticides-azadirachtin (Neem Azal), pyrethrum (Spruzit Neu), capsaicin (Hotpepper wax) and d-Limonene (Orange guard)-were investigated regarding their side effects on C. oculator. Sub-lethal concentrations (LC 25 and LC 50) were determined for azadirachtin and pyrethrum. Then, the parasitized third larval stage of S. littoralis was treated with LC 25 and LC 50 values for the same insecticides. Behavioural effects of the botanical insecticides on C. oculator were performed by choice tests using a Y-tube olfactometer. The results revealed that LC 50 value of pyrethrum was very harmful causing 100% mortality to C. oculator. LC 50 and LC 25 values of azadirachtin and LC 25 values of pyrethrum prolonged development time whilst reducing the longevity, emergence rate and adult dry mass. The behavioural test indicated that the tested botanical insecticides have strong repellent effects on the parasitoid. Thus, this study contributes to the amelioration of the safe use of botanical insecticides against the natural enemy in integrated pest management programs.

Bitkiler, herbivorlar ve doğal düşmanlar arasında karmaşık trofik ilişkiler mevcuttur. Hem herbivorlar hem de doğal düşmanlar, besinlerini bulmada bitkisel kaynaklı kimyasallardan faydalanır. Bitkiler salgılamış oldukları kimyasallarla herbivorları cezbeder. Bitkiler herbivorların saldırısına uğradıklarında da çeşitli bileşimlerde kimyasallar salgılayıp, yayarlar. Bu yayılan kimyasallar, herbivor saldırısı olmadığı durumlarda ortaya çıkan kimyasallardan nitelik ve nicelik olarak farklıdır. Bu şekilde bitkiler tarafından salgılanan uçucu kimyasal bileşikler, bitkinin çevresi ile olan ilişkilerinin değişimine yol açmaktadır. Doğal düşmanlar (parazitoitler ve predatörler), herbivorların beslenmesi sonucu bitkilerin meydana getirdiği kimyasallardan olumlu şekilde etkilenebilmektedir. Ayrıca doğal düşmanlar doğrudan herbivorlar tarafından gelen sinyalleri de, konukçularını ya da avlarını bulmada kullanabilmektedir. Başarılı biyolojik mücadele uygulamaları için bitkiler, herbivorlar ve doğal düşmanlar arasında mevcut trofik ilişkilerin çalışılması gerekmektedir.

Makale TarihçesiÖz − Ephestia kuehniella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) üretiminde uygun besin kullanılması kitle üretim için oldukça önemlidir. Buğday unu ve kepeği (1:1)'nin karışımında oluşan E. kuehniella'nın standart besininden buğday unu sabit kalacak şekilde, 1 nolu (250 g buğday kepeği +250 g mısır unu), 2 nolu (225 g buğday kepeği +225 g mısır unu + 50 g balık unu), 3 nolu (213 g buğday kepeği +212 g mısır unu + 75 g balık unu), 4 nolu (200 g buğday kepeği +200 g mısır unu + 100 g balık unu) 5 nolu (188 g buğday kepeği +188 g mısır unu + 125 g balık unu) ve 6 nolu (175 g buğday kepeği +175 g mısır unu + 150 g balık unu) besinler oluşturulmuştur. Bu besinler üzerinde E. kuehniella'nın bazı biyolojik özellikleri incelenmiştir. Deneme sonucunda E. kuehniella en yüksek ergin çıkışı 2 nolu, en ağır larva 5 nolu (29.0 mg), pupa 1 nolu (22.4 mg), ergin 2 nolu (19.5 mg) ve yumurta ise 6 nolu (36 mg) besinde gerçekleşmiştir. En uzun ergin ömrü (10.48 gün) 6 nolu ve dişi başına ergin ömrü boyunca bırakılan en fazla yumurta sayısı (456.63 adet) 5 nolu besinde belirlenmiştir. En kısa yumurta, larva ve pupa gelişme süresi sırasıyla; 1 nolu (2.15 gün), 3 nolu (25.7 gün) ve 6 nolu (9.6 gün) besinde gerçekleşmiştir. Sonuç olarak geliştirilen besinlerin E. kuehniella'nın üretiminde standart besinden daha iyi sonuç verdiği, ancak mısır unu ve balık unu karışım oranlarının etkisinin belirlenmesi için birkaç döl devam edecek detaylı çalışmaların yapılmasına ihtiyaç olduğu kanısına varılmıştır.
