Effect of Hoof Trimming before the Dry Period on Productive Performance in Perinatal Dairy Cows

Abstract: ABSTRACT. To investigate the effect of hoof trimming before the dry period, the hooves of 10 cows (trimmed group) were trimmed at 79.6 ± 8.6 days before parturition and the hooves of 52 cows were left untrimmed (control group). Blood biochemistry and hormone concentrations were investigated for 6 cows from each group. The daily milk yield after parturition in the trimmed group tended to be higher than that of the control group. Between 0 and 30 days after parturition, the levels of non-esterified fatty acids w… Show more

“…In contrast, the improvement of management affects the variety systems such as locomotor, metabolic and reproductive. The hooves condition is influenced by nutritional factors, environmental conditions, stress factors and hoof trimming (Ando et al 2008, Izci 2018. Hoof trimming is performed to prevent hoof lesions and to maintenance the symmetry and shape of claw.…”

“…Furthermore, different studies gave ambiguous information about the effects of the measures, for example foot trimming. Some studies show that foot trimming can be a fruitful measure in preventing foot disorders (Ando et al, 2008), whereas others show that foot trimming can be a risk factor (e.g. Amory et al, 2006).…”

“…All cows were diagnosed in a hoof trimming chute, and DD was defined as scores 1-3 using the scoring system developed by Manske [9]. BCSs were calculated according to previously reported methods [2]. The DD group was randomly divided into two subgroups based on the treatment; the hooves of 8 cows (antibiotic group) were treated only with 2% lincomycin liquid spray once daily for 3 days, and both hind hooves of 10 cows (trimmed group) were trimmied and treated with 2% lincomycin liquid spray once daily for 3 days.…”

“…Plasma samples obtained from tubes with heparin Na were used to measure the plasma cortisol concentration. The plasma cortisol concentration was analyzed using the enzyme immunoassay reported by Ando [2] with minor modifications using anti-cortisol-3 (Cosmo Bio Co., Tokyo, Japan) and goat anti-rabbit IgG (Chemicon International, Temecula, U.S.A.). The intra-and interassay coefficients of variation of this assay were 3.5% and 4.6%, respectively.…”
