Hoof trimming is necessary for conformation and health of cattle. It is performed to prevent hoof lesions and maintenance the symmetry and shape of claw. At the same time it is a stress factor in dairy cattle. The aim of the study was to investigate the stress effects of hoof trimming on milk yield in healthy dairy cattle. Twenty Simmental dairy cattle were used as material. Functional hoof trimming was performed for all cattle. Dairy milk yield was measured before and after hoof trimming period. There were personal increases and decreases of milk yield recorded in animals. However, these increase and decrease were not statistically significant. As a result of this study hoof trimming is necessary for claw health and prevention for foot diseases. In healthy dairy cattle it causes stress and to decreases in milk yield. On the other hand the hoof trimming time, environmental factors such as flooring system and management style, and the animal related factors such as lactation period and stage, number of milking, breed and age affect the milk yield with hoof trimming positively or negatively.

Dairy farming in western countries with cubicle housing is an efficient way of dairy farming. Though, a disadvantage is the high prevalence and incidence of foot disorders (clinical and subclinical), which cause high economic losses and also seriously impair the welfare of dairy cattle. To point out the importance of reducing the amount and severity of foot disorders, advice to farmers should include information about the scale of the problem and the consequences in terms of economics and animal welfare. To provide support in making decisions on implementing intervention measures, insight into costs and benefits of different measures should be available. The objective of this study, therefore, is to provide more insight into the costs and benefits, for farmer and cow, of different intervention measures to improve dairy cow foot health. Intervention measures were modeled when they were applicable on a dairy farm with cubicle housing and when sufficient information was available in literature. Net costs were calculated as the difference between the costs of the measure and the economic benefits resulting from the measure. Welfare benefits were calculated as well. Cost-effective measures are: improving lying surface (mattress and bedding, h7 and h1/cow per year, respectively), reducing stocking density (break even) and performing additional foot trimming (h1/cow per year). Simultaneously, these measures have a relative high welfare benefit. Labor costs play an important role in the cost-effectiveness of labor-intensive measures. More insight into cost-effectiveness and welfare benefits of intervention measures can help to prioritize when choosing between intervention measures.

ABSTRACT. In the present study, 30 cows were used to evaluate the changes in the peripheral blood leukocyte subpopulation of dairy cows with digital dermatitis (DD) following hoof trimming and antibiotic treatment. The cows were divided into two groups; 18 cows (DD group) had DD on both hind feet, and 12 cows (control group) had four feet with no clinical abnormalities. The DD group was further divided into two groups based on the treatment; the antibiotic group (8 cows) was treated with only 2% lincomycin liquid spray once daily for 3 days, and the trimmed group (10 cows) received trimming of hooves as well as treatment with 2% lincomycin liquid spray. The plasma cortisol concentration was significantly higher in both DD groups before treatment than in the control group, and it decreased significantly after hoof trimming in the trimmed group. The number of CD3+ and CD21 + cells in both DD groups before treatment was significantly lower than that of the control group. The number of CD3+ and CD21 + cells in the trimmed group increased after treatment. These results indicated that cows with DD suffer from stress and reduced number of T and B cells. Treatment of DD with both hoof trimming and 2% lincomycin liquid spray was effective for reducing the stress and bringing the immune cell number back to the normal range.
