Abstract:The aim of this study is to execute the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of high speed jet under different input pressures (i.e., 80, 120, 160, 200, and 240 MPa). In particular, this study focuses on the pressure distributions and streamlines of the orifice in high speed jet, primarily because the orifice plays a role in accelerating the flow of liquid, having significant effects on the working performance of high speed jet. Firstly, the two-dimensional geometric model of high speed jet is established on the basis of the actual operational conditions. Next, the unstructured grids of high speed jet are generated by means of ICEM CFD 16.0. Virtually, the computational fluid dynamics simulation of high speed jet is a two-phase flow (gas-liquid) problem, so the homogeneous (Eulerian-Eulerian) two-phase model is employed to carry out the gas-liquid interaction. Particularly, the turbulent flow computation of high speed jet is carried out with procedures based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. As the flow of high speed jet is highly turbulent, the RNG k-ɛ turbulence model derived by Yakhot et al. (1992) is utilized in this study. Finally, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of high speed jet is implemented by using the CFX-Solver in ANSYS CFX 16.0. The simulation results show that when liquid flows through the orifice, the pressure of flows decreases swiftly, whereas the velocity of flows skyrockets to the maximum value and then decreases slightly. In addition, the relationship between the working pressure and input pressure and the relationship between the working velocity and input pressure are achieved, which could provide certain theoretical guidance for predicting the working pressure and velocity of high speed jet based on real input pressures.

Thermoplastic cassava starch (TPS)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/silica (SiO2) composites were prepared by a melt‐mixing method. The effects of the content and surface properties of SiO2 on the processing, mechanical properties, thermal stability, morphology, and structure of the TPS/PVA/SiO2 composites were investigated. With increasing SiO2 content, the plasticizing times of the TPS/PVA/SiO2 composites were shortened. After the SiO2 surface was treated with a silane coupling agent (KH550), the plasticizing times of the TPS/PVA/SiO2 composites decreased significantly. The tensile strength, elongation at break, and Young's modulus of the TPS/PVA/SiO2 composites increased. The mechanical properties of the TPS/PVA/SiO2 composites containing treated SiO2 were higher than those with untreated SiO2. The thermal decomposition temperatures of the TPS/PVA/SiO2 composites were improved with the addition of SiO2. The presence of inorganic fillers was beneficial to the improvement of the thermal stability of the polymers. The reaction between the treated SiO2 and the starch molecules was beneficial to the formation of more stable structures. The treated SiO2 indicated good interfacial adhesion and uniform dispersion in the matrix. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2016, 133, 44020.

BACKGROUND Nanoscale tapioca starch (NTS) was successfully developed by high‐speed jet in our previous study. In this study, the adsorption capacity of Cu2+ onto NTS was further discussed. The optimal adsorption conditions (pH, contact time, contact temperature, initial Cu2+ concentration, and adsorbent concentration), adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic were also evaluated. RESULTS The results showed that NTS exhibited excellent performance in adsorption of Cu2+, with adsorption capacities of 122.31 mg g−1 for Cu2+ (pH 7, 0.04 g L−1, 0.2 g L−1, 313.15 K and 10 min). The pseudo‐second‐order and Langmuir isotherms models could be used to explain the adsorption kinetics and adsorption equilibrium, respectively. The thermodynamic results showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic with an increase in entropy. Cu2+ was adsorbed onto NTS, which was confirmed by energy dispersive spectrometry analysis. CONCLUSION These findings indicated that NTS might be an effective, environment‐friendly and renewable bio‐resource adsorbent for removing heavy metals in industrial effluent. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry
