“…The metabolic effect of high glucose concentration results partially from the age-dependent modifications of the insulin-triggered signaling pathways (insulin resistance). We showed previously that high glucose concentration also modifies the biosynthesis of extracellular matrix components such as fibronectin and type III collagen [13]. A 3 g/l glucose concentration in the fibroblast culture medium produced a selective increase in type III collagen and the fibronectin biosynthesis, comparable to modifications seen for these 2 matrix components with in vitro aging of fibroblasts, that is increasing passage numbers (the Hayflick model [14]).…”
