Effect of Heavy Metals on Soil Enzyme Activity at Different Field Conditions in Middle Spis Mining Area (Slovakia)

Abstract: Heavy metals concentrations were measured in the former mining area located in Hornad river valley (Slovakia). Soil samples were taken in 2012 from 20 sites at two field types (grasslands, heaps of waste material) and two different areas. Total content of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Hg), urease (URE), acid phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), soil reaction (pH) were changing depending on the field/area type. The tailing pond and processing plants have been found as the biggest sources of pollution. URE… Show more

“…Here, high levels of heavy metals were found not only in soil, water or sediment samples (Angelovičová et al 2014;Holub et al 2015;Singovszká et al 2015), but several studies detected extremely high levels of heavy metals in plants (Banasová & Lackovicová 2004; or animal products (Stanovič et al 2016).…”

“…Generally, metals are known to inhibit soil enzyme activities (Angelovicova et al 2014;Pan and Yu 2011;Belyaeva et al 2005;Kizilkaya and Bayrakli 2005;etc. ); however, according to the results obtained in this study, enzyme activities were not affected by increases in metal concentrations.…”
